Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
